Zimbra hosting 5.0.18 upgrade completed successfully

zimbra_gold_partner [Updated August 2, 2009: Per the systems status page, updates  to Zimbra, BES servers and online help desk have all been completed successfully and are active.]

Zimbra Gold partner host and consultant 01.com, Inc. has moved up plans to upgrade its Zimbra cloud hosting environment to version 5.0.18 from 5.0.16.  Note that a security patch was installed on July 1, and that version 5.0.17 was renamed as version 5.0.18 by Zimbra to accommodate an early release to address an issue not impacting our users.

To accomplish this upgrade, service in the 01.com Zimbra groupware hosted service may be interrupted between the hours of 10PM CDT (GMT – 5) Saturday night, August 1, until about 2AM CDT Sunday morning, August 2, 2009.

We apologize for any inconvenience this down-time may cause to clients of the 01.com Zimbra cloud, and expect the benefits of the upgrade to materially outweigh the drawback of down-time during a scheduled maintenance period.

Pre-upgrade testing of version 5.0.18 was completed early.  During testing we did notice one non-critical, existing issue with outbound mail filters in the Advanced web client.

01.com typically stays within 30 days of the latest Zimbra release.  Select enhancements to Zimbra 5.0.18 include many updates and fixes, for example, there is an update to the Zimbra Connector for Blackberry BES, and there are many updates to the to the Calendar Server:

  1. CalDAV: Add support for calendar delegation (bug 21489)
  2. Perf improvement for massively shared public calendars (bug 38476)
  3. CalDAV: cache ctag requests to improve performance/scalability (bug 37683)
  4. Creating appointments in iCal does not send the invite (bug 38112)
  5. Search for resources across domains (bug 21750)
  6. Number of domains in the attendee lines causes too many ldap lookups (bug 38266)
  7. Events without DTEND/DURATION don’t appear in calendar summary view in web client (bug 28615)
  8. CALDAV: cannot see appointments in shared calendar on a shared MBS (bug 38527)
  9. NullPointerException when adding an iCalendar object with nonstandard component name (bug 37691)
  10. Invalid ICS files fail to import (bug 37703)
  11. CalDAV: NPE while getting mountpoint target (bug 37745)

Note that both enhancements and bugs are categorized by Zimbra as “bugs”.  You can see the full list of new features and bug fixes for 5.0.18 on the Zimbra project management website.  Once available, the release notes for 5.0.18 enhancements may be downloaded here as a PDF for your convenience.

See how this upgrade fits into the bigger picture of the Zimbra roadmap.

I thought that I had heard that you guys would be pushing Z6 by june or so (giving support to very large address books is important to me). Is that behind schedule? Did I hear wrong?

    Thanks.

GA release for Zimbra 6 is currently scheduled about September. Given the potential for that date to be pushed back, and for version testing we’re typically 30 days behind minor releases, Q1, 2010 looks likely at this point. We plan to publish a tentative schedule on the date once we get closer, as well as provide opportunities to beta test the Z6 environment for current customers and prospects.

Will this fix the timezone bug in the calendar? We still have several users whose calendar invites are sporadically seen by others as shifted by a couple hours, and we were told this is a known bug.

    Thanks!
