Upgrade to hosted Zimbra 5.0.16 completed successfully

01-upgrade-mast01.com upgraded its Zimbra cloud hosting environment to version 5.0.16 from 5.0.13.  Service in the 01.com Zimbra groupware cloud hosting environment was interrupted between the hours of 10PM CDT (GMT – 5) Saturday night [convert to your time-zone], May 23, and about 2AM CDT Sunday morning, May 24, 2009.

We apologize for any inconvenience this down-time may have caused to clients of the 01.com Zimbra cloud, and expect the benefits of the upgrade to materially outweigh the drawback of down-time during a scheduled maintenance period.

01.com typically stays within 30 days of the latest Zimbra release.  In this case we decided to skip 5.0.14/15 because there are not enough benefits to warrant down-time for most clients.   By delaying the upgrade, we will deliver the improved performance and material new benefits we expect from Zimbra version 5.0.16, combined with fixes included in 5.0.14/15.  Select enhancements to Zimbra 5.0.16 include these user updates:

  1. Support for Internet Explorer 8 (Bug 24377)
  2. Resource accounts are marked as Busy when a resource accepts a meeting invite. This will avoid the issue of double booking a resource. (Bug 26407)
  3. Zimbra webmail can now determine the correct MIME type for a file so that these files open in the correct application (Bug 32536).
  4. Zimbra connector for outlook (ZCO). During the installation of new ZCO accounts a message displays to let users know that a new empty profile will be created (Bug 35337)
  5. Calendar Resources can now be configured to accept appointments for some of the invitations in a recurring meeting if the number of conflicts for the resource is within the configured limit. The Maximum Allowed Number of Conflicts and the Maximum Allowed Percent of Conflicts can be configured from the Administration console (by request in the 01.com Cloud hosting environment). (Bug 35259)

And these select admin updates:

  1. Administrators are notified when the mailbox server disk is near full. The default is to send out warning alerts when the threshold is 85% and a critical alert when the threshold is 95%. This threshold can be configured. (Bug 16900 33010)
  2. A new tool is available to migrate ZCS accounts to another ZCS server when moving accounts between two separate ZCS installs. Individual account data, including email messages, contacts, calendar, tasks are migrated as tar files. This is a BETA release. (Bug 30163)
  3. Free Busy Interop is GA at 5.0.16. Viewing the Free/Busy Schedule of users that are across a mix of ZCS servers and third party email servers can be configured. For this release, this interop feature can be configured between ZCS and Microsoft Exchange Servers.

You can see the full list of new features and bug fixes for 5.0.16 on the Zimbra project management website.  The release notes for 5.x and 5.0.16 enhancements may be downloaded here as a PDF for your convenience.

See how this upgrade fits into the bigger picture of the Zimbra roadmap.
